Megalópolis de Doñana

ESPOmar has served for Dr. Sean McCartan (Coventry University) to work on the idea of a future megalopolis that surrounds the natural space of Doñana.

A 2 week EBDIG (European Boat Design Innovation Group)  Transport Design Lab was carried out by Coventry University Transport Design students as a collaborative venture with Cadiz University on the 2nd September 2017. The Design Lab involved 3 groups of 5 students, who developed a future transport scenario for the Doñana megalopolis in 2050, where Cadiz will be the economic centre of the Andalusian hydrogen economy. Offshore floating wind turbines in the  Bay of Cadiz will connect to coastal based electrolysis hydrogen production units. In the case of Navantia, its business presence in this sector offers a business diversification strategy, and the efficient use of its industrial facilities at the Bay of Cadiz that are perfectly located from an offshore wind farm deployment point of view.  These facilities are also equipped with the appropriate infrastructure for the assembly, installation, operation and maintenance activities that offshore wind farms require.

This future vision of the  Doñana megalopolis will unify the provinces of Cadiz, Seville and Huelva, in the Knowledge Economy, as the hydrogen economy is a prelude to the circular economy.

Transport innovation will be a critical factor in facilitating this paradigm shift. This current combined population of the Doñana megalopolis of 2.4 million will be expected to reach 10 million+ by 2050 in response to the Knowledge Economy opportunities of both the hydrogen economy and the circular economy. As the Doñana megalopolis grows to a population of 10 million+ by 2050 the design challenge of this Design Lab was to develop an integrated urban public transport system connecting bike, train, tram, bus, car, and river transport. Where the transport system proposals connect Cadiz to other cities and towns in the Doñana megalopolis, Cordoba, Faro airport and Tangiers. These transport system proposals addressed the significant design opportunity in terms of luxury travel in this multi-modal sustainable transport future due to the significant tourism sector of the local economy.
